Plot

Vijay learns about the path of fire from his father Amongst the first recall values for the original Agneepath is Amitabh Bachchan’s trademark self-introduction dialogue of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan. While evaluating its official remake, the first thing that crosses your mind is how the reinterpretation of this signature scene would be. Unlike in the original, the monologue plays pretty late in the remake, whereby it establishes Vijay’s identity over merely introducing him and with such individuality and elegance that it pays a perfect homage to the original, while at the same time not blatantly imitating it. That is how a remake is supposed to be! Retaining the spirit of the original and having a soul of its own. This dialogue kinda summarizes the overall aura of the remake.
The basic backdrop remains the same. Kancha Cheena (Sanjay Dutt) is the uncrowned king of Mandwa Island and terminates the rebellious village schoolmaster. The master’s son swears revenge and grows up to be Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) under the wings of Rauf Lala (Rishi Kapoor). Lala who trades in human and drug trafficking, rules the Mumbai underbelly. Vijay uses Lala to reach Kancha and thereby reclaim his island and self-esteem.
While the primary plotline remains the same as Mukul Anand’s classic, director Karan Malhotra along with co-writer Ila Bedi Datta refreshingly revamps the screenplay giving it a new structure and approach. So you never miss the omission of Mithun Chakravarthy’s award-winning Krishnan Iyer from the original and welcome the induction of Rishi Kapoor’s foul-mouthed and despicable kasai character. If at all the film falls into predictable zone, it’s not because you are familiar with the original but because at the core of it, the story remains a basic revenge drama. The film employs the age-old conflict of a reformist school-teacher versus the conniving zamindar, duping the villagers of their lands.
The remake isn’t essentially remodeled to modern times because the film retains its original era thereby reviving the raw essence of the 1990 film. And beyond the epoch, Malhotra also imparts the cinematic treatment of that time period to his film. So both the villain and hero have stylized entries, their confrontations boast of high-voltage drama and, in the climax, when the bruised and battered protagonist rises to take revenge (in exactly the same manner like his father was killed), he wins instant applause. Also the idea of Vijay concealing his identity from his teenaged sister is so intrinsic of the era (a la Anil Kapoor’s Jeevan Ek Sanghursh).
Where the new Agneepath raises the bar is by casting Sanjay Dutt as the baddie. In his black-attire and bald-look, Dutt has such solid screen-presence that the director makes things difficult for himself with a challenge of how would Hrithik’s hero overpower the villain. Thereby the film employs some extreme action, which is more brutal than boisterous, to justify Kancha’s imposing persona and the subsequent seethe in Vijay’s revenge. Thankfully, what puts Agneepath a notch above the recent mindless actioners is that it has a basic human connect which it reasonably balances with the extreme action and never blatantly exploits any emotion.
Piyush Mishra’s dialogues are impressive with rhetoric punches every now and then. And even when the lines go unrefined for Rishi Kapoor’s crude character, it leaves immense impact without crossing the familial domain. Cinematography by Ravi K Chandran and Kiran Deohans is remarkable. Akiv Ali’s editing is accomplished and despite the film having a three-hour runtime, you never lose the narrative for a moment. The only slacker is the obligatory romance track (Priyanka Chopra) but thankfully even that is kept short. Ajay-Atul’s music and esp. the background score are effective. Abbas Ali Moghul’s action is raw and unrestrained.
Beyond his hold on the subject, Karan Malhotra succeeds in extracting inspiring performances from the impressive cast. The usually suave Hrithik Roshan convincingly glides into his coarse character here and has a towering presence. He completely redefines Vijay Dinanath Chauhan and never in his act do you see even a glimpse of the original. Sanjay Dutt reeks of menace and malice through his sadistic laughs. At times he overdoes his guffaws but therein lays his strength, which he uses to the hilt. Rishi Kapoor has never looked or played so mean onscreen before. As the kohl-eyed Rauf Lala, the affable actor reinvents his screen image with a beastly streak to his character. So good is the actor that you never get enough of him. Arish Bhiwandiwala as the young Vijay Chauhan puts in a confident act. Priyanka Chopra, Zarina and Om Puri are functional.
With Bollywood being obsessed with remakes in recent times, Agneepath is an important lesson on how to pay proper tribute to the original. Despite the original being his home production, Karan Johar attempts playing with fire (treading uncharted territory) with Agneepath and emerges victorious. Agneepath has the fire for a lustrous entertainer!

Plot

A Ra.One (Hindi: रा.वन; full: Random Access–Version 1.0) is a 2011 Hindi science fiction superhero film written and directed by Anubhav Sinha. The film stars Shahrukh Khan in a double-role as Shekhar Subramanium, a nerdy father and game developer, and his superhero look-alike G.One. The film also stars Kareena Kapoor as Shekhar’s wife, Armaan Verma as their son, and Arjun Rampal as the titular game villain Ra.One. Shahana Goswami, Dalip Tahil and Chinese-American actor Tom Wu star in supporting roles, along with Rajinikanth, Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra making guest appearances. The film is jointly produced by Eros International and Khan’s production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, and was originally scheduled to release on 3 June 2011. However, due to extensive post-production work involving special effects and the 3D conversion, its release was postponed.Development of Ra.One commenced in 2004, when Anubhav Sinha wrote a three-page short story based on the commercial, that dealt with two kids controlling a human with a remote. Shahrukh Khan was then approached after finalizing the story, which Khan agreed to produce and star in. Work on pre-production began after the release of Khan’s Om Shanti Om in 2007,[3] with principal photography commencing in March 2009.[4] In July 2011, it was announced that the entire film would be converted into 3D.[5] The budget of the film is estimated at INR 175 crore (US$ 39 million),[1] and overtook Enthiran to become India’s most expensive film to date.Ra.One had multiple premieres in Dubai, London and Toronto,[7] a few days before the release of the film. The film had it’s international theatrical release on the Diwali weekend beginning October 26, 2011.[8] The film released across 5,000 screens worldwide in 2D and around 600 screens in 3D,[9][10] along with its dubbed versions in Tamil, Telugu and German,[11] making it the largest cinematic release in the world among Indian.According to director Anubhav Sinha, the idea of making Ra.One originated while he was watching a commercial on television six years ago. Sinha said, “The commercial dealt with two kids controlling a human with a remote. It was fascinating, and the visual stayed with me for some time.” Sinha wrote a three-page short story based on the commercial, which he felt was good enough to be made into a film.[4] Upon finalizing the story, he approached Shahrukh Khan with the film in August 2005, and Khan instantly agreed to produce and star in it.[4] Red Chillies Entertainment’s Keitan Yadav revealed that during the release of Main Hoon Na (2004), Khan was keen on making a VFX-loaded film that was larger than life.[13] His production company continued working on other projects and seeking for the right film until they finally decided on Ra.One.[13] Prior to starting the film, Khan approached several directors to helm the project but they all refused due to various concerns.”Ra.One is the modern, new age technology version of our mythological “Raavan”, who was a mixture of ten different evil characters. I am essaying the role of G.One or better say “Jeevan”, a superhero who saves the mankind from Ra.One’s torment. Through this film, I want to prove that Indian superheroes can also be as cool as the international ones.”—Shahrukh Khan on Ra.One Pre-production work for the film began in November 2007 after the release of Khan’s Om Shanti Om (2007). Sinha spent several months going through video clips, digital art portals and comic books; he later explained that this process helped him in creating a novel character.[3] Khan stated that “When we started this film, the idea was can we make a simple film, about a husband, wife and child and then suddenly blow everyone’s mind when they start fighting [...] So there were two films in one: the people who like the action…and those who like a family film.”Goofy gaming expert, Shekhar Subramaniam (Shah Rukh Khan) wants to be a super hero for his son Prateik (Armaan Verma). But his young son, like all young sons, thinks super villans are more cool. So Shekhar creates the ultimate clash of good against evil by pitting a very powerful anti-hero Ra-One against a seemingly less potent good guy. But can the good guys ever lose?Movie Review: Rajnikant’s Robot may have pre-dated it, but Ra-One does manage to hold despite the larger-than-life quality of Rajni’s antics as Chitti. Here, Shah Rukh Khan does the train walk sideways and he does it rather well. And if that is not enough, the two desi sci fi heroes have a split second encounter on the streets of Mumbai, with Rajni saar showing off his flying googles act and SRK replicating it with elan.

Plot

When human forces discover the existence of the Vampire and Lycan clans, a war to eradicate both species commences. The vampire warrioress Selene leads the battle against humankind On April 4, 2011, Screen Gems released the following synopsis:
“Kate Beckinsale, star of the first two films, returns in her lead role as the vampire warrioress Selene, who escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.
Six months after the events of Underworld: Evolution, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) was captured by humans. Eventually both government officials and the public learn about the existence of the two immortal species of Vampires and Lycans (Werewolves). A crusade and all-out war has begun: study and eradicate. After being imprisoned in cryogenic suspension for 12 years, Selene manages to escape the facility. During the same time, another suspect has also escaped the same facility that Selene was in. The suspect was Eve (India Eisley), a hybrid who is the key to ending the warSelene (Kate Beckinsale) sets herself free from the cryogenic suspension entrapment after 12 years. In the new scenario, the local government and the public come to know about the existence of Vampires as well as Lycans. Selene escapes the prison and finds another absconding prisoner Eve (India Eisley), a hybrid, on her way to connect the clues. Now she has to start a crusade against the humankind that wants to eradicate the two immortal species
‘Underworld’ is one of those series which couldn’t boast of a substantial storyline. The story can be explained in just one line. See mindless action in 3 D. The new edition demonstrates the value that bigger studios give to the audience’s intellect.
One can argue about the flaws of the story but then it will be difficult for the challenger because how can you question any film which has just action.
Kate Beckinssle is the new wonder woman. She thinks about her hybrid lover even while dodging the bullets. Start counting the number of people rather living beings and you will learn the counting till thousand at least. Killing, killing, and more killing. Spare me.
Miserable script allows the directors Mans Marlind, Bjorn Stein to go on a hunting spree. They have come up with the finest possible three 3 D effects. Perhaps the technicians have shown more aesthetical sense than them. Excellent CGI gives the otherwise pathetic story a new aspect. Close up shots are extensively used to showcase the ruthlessness of Selene.
The nonsense has taken a new height with ‘Underworld 4′ as the film basically feeds on the misery of audiences. Some may find the return of Kate Beckinsale as a treat to watch but trust me it would not have made any difference even if Milla Jovovich or for that matter Sandra Bullock would have been the heroine. All they need to manage is to stand with two feet distance between legs and a little hunch. And they require doing one more thing, look menacing. By the way the ticket collector looked more menacing as he is the one who has to bear this torture for more than one show.
The 90 minute celebration of violence is also about finding the hybrid daughter of Selene and Michael and a pharmaceutical company that wants to create ultra powerful Lycans. It took me a little while to figure this out.
No explanation given, the only image which remains in our head is of Kate Beckinsale, other characters are forgettable. The other good thing about the film is its length. Make up your mind and snooze but then you can’t do that also due to the super loud background score. There is a sequence where Selene enters into a prohibited zone in absolute silence, that’s your only chance. You know for what.
Too much focus on shock element makes the spectator absolutely shock proof towards the end.
‘Underworld 4: Awakening’ is a great test of patience. Go with an iPod if you are a big Kate Beckinsale fan…
